Green Transition

Welcome to the Green Transition thematic category within the GAEA (Green Alternatives for European Autonomy) program!

The economic growth experienced over the past decades has been accompanied by significant environmental degradation, positioning Europe at the forefront of the climate change crisis. This rapid industrial and economic expansion has resulted in substantial greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and resource depletion. Consequently, Europe now faces pressing challenges related to global warming, biodiversity loss, and environmental pollution. These issues underscore the urgent need for comprehensive and sustainable strategies to mitigate climate change and promote environmental stewardship. Europe is currently striving to fulfill its European Green Deal goal and meet carbon neutrality by the year 2050. The vehicle to achieve this goal is Green Transition: representing a fundamental transformation of the continent’s economic, social, and environmental frameworks. This transition is driven by the urgent need to combat climate change and reduce dependency on fossil fuels, leading to the widespread adoption of renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, and hydroelectric power.

Green Transition is of a paramount importance as it not only encompasses the whole vision of the program but also necessitates the development and implementation of cutting-edge technologies in renewable energy, energy efficiency, sustainable agriculture, and waste management. Those areas play a major role in Europe’s economic growth, fostering innovation not only facilitating the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and resource consumption but also stimulating economic growth by opening new markets and creating green jobs.

This Innovation Areas is addressed to:

  • Individuals from Business, Finance, Marketing, Technology, and Engineering academic sectors studying or recently completed their studies (up to four years) in any European University
  • Researchers and/or Ph.D. students in any relevant to the Innovation Areas science fields from any European University

who have or want to develop an innovative idea for Green Transition.

  • Economic and Financial Constraints: High initial costs; the transition to renewable energy sources and the modernization of infrastructure require substantial upfront investments.
  • Innovative Energy Storage Systems: While the renewable energy industry in collaboration with academia has made significant steps in elevating green technologies many innovations are still in the early stages and require scaling. This includes energy storage solutions, carbon capture and storage (CCS), and advanced renewable energy technologies.
  • Environmental Impact Mitigation: Development and implementation of renewable energy sources while minimizing the environmental footprint.
  • Climate Change Mitigation: Focusing on innovative solutions that will reduce GHG emissions, one of the main problems that affect the climate.
  • Social Aspects of Green Transition: Public awareness and education of the public about the importance of Green Transition and its impact on society.
  • Advanced Energy Storage Systems: Technologies for capturing and storing renewable energy.
  • Integrated Waste Management Systems: Developing efficient waste management and recycling systems.
  • Urban Planning Initiatives: Urban planning initiatives that include the creation of parks, green roofs, and community gardens enhance the quality of life in cities.
  • Integrated Agricultural Systems: Developing efficient systems that promote organic farming and land protection, and focus on reducing energy consumption during the whole or a significant part of the production life-cycle.
